20 Jul 2010 06:33 pm

Step Up Technical Solutions here in Union City, NJ has always been a big proponent of having some level of spy software installed on EVERY computer.  We run into countless individuals and small businesses that need data recovery services in New Jersey. In almost every case, the only preventative measures taken by the PC owners was have pre-installed software that came with the computer as their only means of defense. To be blunt, this will not protect whats needs protecting.

For whatever reason Internet security systems in New Jersey seem to consistently be flawed in that they lack the proper protection. Protection that is not expensive these days (you get what you pay for).

There are a gazillion products on the market that can effectiveley protect your data from hackers. With a little research, you can pick the one with the appropriate features for your specific needs. Considering the availablity and price of such software, AND the immense rick being taken by not addressingyour Internet security, it seems like a no brainer to go out and pick up a product for your personal or professional use.

No doing so could mean your paypal info, credit card info, home address and phone number even private personal material such as photos and videos could be compromised and put ito the wrong hands.

Instead of listing the pros and cons of individual spyware removers, HERE is a link that sums up the best products on the market.

Picking The Right Registry Cleaner Online

17 Jul 2010 05:42 pm

A very common problem we run into as computer repair technicians in Jersey City NJ and elsewhere, is the problem of a slow computer. Now depending on the age and quality of your PC there are different ways of going about curing what we call “turtle computers”.

Some of this info has been covered in past posts, so for now I am just going to concentrate on what a registry cleaner can do to speed up your PC and when to use it.

The best instances to use a registry cleaner for your home computer is when you have little to no hard drive space remaining. This can be checked in Windows by going to My Computer and checking out the C drive. So if you do find yourself with very little space, definitely look into the registry option.

The first thing to do is to make sure whatever registry cleaner you are looking into is compatible with your operating system. Assuming it is, the next step is to research the software online to see what reviews you can find.

Also, make sure the cleaner has a comprehensive scan feature, as this is the most effective means of finding errors in your registry that are bogging down you PC. 99% of online registries offer a free trial where you can check out the comprehensive scan at no cost.

A nice little write up that goes into a bit more detail can be found here.

Specific Steps to Keep Your Online Data Safe

15 Jul 2010 10:05 pm

Because we are based out of Union City, NJ, one of Step Up Technical Solutions primary markets locally is New Jersey Internet Security Systems.

When working with Internet security problems on a regular basis, certain things pop up over and over again. he purpose of this post is to dole out some basic tips on what you can do to significantly improve your over all Internet security…whether you reside in NJ or not.

Below you will find a link to an excellent article detailing exactly what to do to make sure you keep your very valuable and important information safe. This applies to personal files such as photos, records, video etc. as well as general business information your company stores online.

To summarize the main takeaways..

1. Always be very cautions and conservative about what information you put online and who who give it to. Not all websites have secure ordering and not all emails can’t be hacked. So make sure you know where you are placing your data.

2. Email is a prime time method used by the less-than-ethical among us to try and steal info from you and or hack personal information. Don’t assume every hyperlink is ok to click on.

3. Keep current and update your anti-virus software regularly.

4. make sure you are using the security features that come pre-installed in your browser (I recommend FireFox).

5. Altho0ugh you may trust friends with your passwords…can you be sure they don’t have a virus themselves?

6. Regularly backup all your most essential data and keep it offline.

7. Get a plan in place  in case the worst happens. So many computer repairs in Jersey City and other NJ locations we have worked with could have been avoided were a proper plan in place to limit damage once a person or businesses Internet security is breached.

A subset of this category is laptops, which require a somewhat different set of skills to repair than are used with desktops. In order to help you out, I have posted a link to a great article to help people choose the perfect laptop for themselves….

Laptops are everywhere these days. Years ago a typical family would have one main computer, now it seems as though each family member wants their own individual laptop. Most people are not informed about what laptop makes the most sense for their particular needs. This leads to people purchasing expensive machines that either don’t do what they need, or do WAY more than they need.

This article does a tremendous job of explaining what everyone should be thinking about when it is time to buy a laptop.

Covered in the article are topics such as

-Size

-Hard Drive

-Ram

-CPU

-Cennections

-Battery

-Accessories

They author points out that buying a laptop is not your typical buying decision. He uses jeans as a metaphor, because you don’t get to try on a laptop in a dressing room to see if it fits before making a purchase.

This article will benefit anyone looking to get a laptop, no matter what purpose they intent to use it for.

Take care…
